Virtuosi on Jew’s harp — the national instrument of Sakha — and traditional singing, this incredible group create virtually electric overtones, render animals’ cries, footsteps and natural sounds vividly, sing of the people and the environment, and eventually actualize “nature” in front of us.
Ayarkhaan (Айархаан)
A Jew’s harp / voice group in Sakha Republic, Eastern Siberia. The name of the group can be translated as “creative spirit.” The leader, Albina Degtyareva, became a member of Ivan Alexeyev’s mouth harp ensemble called “Algys” when she was studying Yakut (Sakha) language and literature at Yakutsk State University (currently North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk), and after participating in the 2nd International Jew’s Harp Festival and Congress that was held in Yakutsk in 1991, she started to play across the world and was selected as one of the nine Jew’s harp masters in the world at the 7th International Jew’s Harp Festival and Congress in 2011. She formed Ayarkhaan in 2002, who are virtuosi on Jew’s harp, the instrument that exists around the world in various forms and is nationally acknowledged and said to be an instrument made by God in Sakha. They are also the initiators of the revival and mastery of the traditional singing style “d'ieretii yrya” that had been endangered. Generating superbly rich and complex overtones that almost lead us to have an illusion that their music is electronic, and livelily depicting cries of various animals and sounds of winds and waves, they actualize “nature” through sound, music, song and words that resonate concurrently.
