菊地雅章

1939年東京生まれ。太平洋戦争中は福島県会津若松市に疎開。東京藝術大学音楽学部附属音楽高等学校作曲科卒業後、18歳でプロデビューし、渡辺貞夫、日野皓正、富樫雅彦、ライオネル・ハンプトン、ソニー・ロリンズなどと共演。1968年バークリー音楽大学に留学。1973年ニューヨークに移住。70年代にはアコースティック、エレクトリックともに多彩な活動を展開し、山本邦山、ゲイリー・ピーコック、ジョー・ヘンダーソン、エルヴィン・ジョーンズ、マル・ウォルドロン、チャーリー・ミンガスなどと共演、とりわけギル・エヴァンス、マイルス・デイヴィスと深くコミット。1981年に発表した『Susto』『One-Way Traveller』のグルーヴは現在に至るまでクラブシーンを触発し続けている。リアルタイム・シンセサイザー・インプロヴィゼーションへの取り組みやファンクバンド「All Night, All Right, Off White Boogie Band」などを経て、1990年にゲイリー・ピーコック、ポール・モチアンとアコースティックトリオ「Tethered Moon」を結成し、プッチーニ、クルト・ワイル、エディット・ピアフ、ジミ・ヘンドリックスなどの楽曲を再解釈。また、日野皓正、富樫雅彦、峰厚介、吉田達也、グレッグ・オズビーなどを擁する自己のグループやピアノソロで活動。2010年に肺の手術を受け長い療養生活に入るも、治療費援助のためのベネフィット・コンサートも東京とニューヨークで開かれ、徐々に回復に向かいつつある。2000年代までに80枚を超えるアルバムを発表、様々なジャンルを横断し、独特の瞑想的で深い空間性を確立していたが、今年ECMからリリースされポール・モチアンの遺作ともなった最新作『Sunrise』でその音楽性はさらに深化し、新たな境地を示している（ニューヨーク・タイムズ記事／全文和訳）。最近では若手随一のベーシストのトーマス・モーガン、アコースティック・ギターのトッド・ニューフェルドを擁するトリオでの活動を通して、その新しい演奏様式と方法論で大きな反響を呼んでいる。

Masabumi Kikuchi

Born in 1939 in Tokyo. Evacuated to Aizuwakamatsu in Fukushima Prefecture during the Pacific War. Graduated from the Senior High School of Music attached to the Faculty of Music, Tokyo University of the Arts, he professionally debuted at the age of 18 and played with Sadao Watanabe, Terumasa Hino, Masahiko Togashi, Lionel Hampton and Sonny Rollins. Studied at Berklee College of Music in 1968 and moved to New York in 1973. In the 1970s, he worked extensively in acoustic and electric formats with Hozan Yamamoto, Gary Peacock, Joe Henderson, Elvin Jones, Mal Waldron and Charles Mingus, and collaborated intensively with Gil Evans and Miles Davis. The groove of his Susto and One-Way Traveller, released in 1981, has still been stimulating the electronic dance music scene. After working on real-time synthesizer improvisation and leading the funk band “All Night, All Right, Off White Boogie Band,” he formed the acoustic trio “Tethered Moon” with Gary Peacock and Paul Motian in 1990 and reinterpreted tunes by Puccini, Kurt Weill, Édith Piaf and Jimi Hendrix while working in his groups having Terumasa Hino, Masahiko Togashi, Kohsuke Mine, Tatsuya Yoshida, Greg Osby and Paul Motian as well as on piano solo. He had a lung operation in 2010 and entered a long process of recuperation, but benefit concerts were held in Tokyo and New York, and he has gradually been recovering. He had already worked across genres and established unique, meditating and profound spatial concept releasing more than 80 albums by the 2000s, but this year Sunrise, his latest release from ECM and the last recording of Paul Motian, exhibited the fact that his music has entered an even deeper and newer territory (cf. a feature by The New York Times). Recently his trio with one of the best rising bassists Thomas Morgan and the acoustic guitarist Todd Neufeld has been making great impacts by their innovative playing style and methodology.
