Baby Arabia in Tokyo

仏教徒がマジョリティを占めるタイでアラブ／マレー音楽を35年以上演奏し、イスラム・コミュニティの聴衆を楽しませ続けているバンド。メンバーはタイ人だが、アラブ／マレー文化の「エモーション」を独自に抽出。アラビア語、マレー語を話さないメンバーが歌っているにも関わらず、歌詞は正確に伝わっていると言われる。
タイにおける「普通の」イスラム教徒をテーマにしたPanu Aree、Kong Rithdee、Kaweenipon Ketprasitによる連作ドキュメンタリー映画の3本目『Baby Arabia』が2011年に公開された。今回コンサート前に日本語・英語字幕つきでHDCAM上映。昨年惜しまれつつ他界したヴォーカリストJamilah Boonmalerdのパフォーマンスの貴重な記録でもある。

A band that has been playing Arab-Malay music and entertaining the Muslim community in the Buddist-majority country Thailand for more than 35 years. The members are Thai, but they have extracted the “emotion” of Arab-Malay culture in their own way. In spite of the fact that they do not speak Arabic and Malay, the languages they sing in, it is said that the listers understand their lyrics.
The third film Baby Arabia in a series of documentaries by Panu Aree, Kong Rithdee and Kaweenipon Ketprasit, who have been working on the theme of “moderate” Muslims in Thailand, was released in 2011 (screened before the concert in HDCAM with English and Japanese subtitles). The film is also an important record of the performance by the vocalist Jamilah Boonmalerd, who sadly passed away last year.
